FEELIN’ FINE
Kirsty Hulka, leader of Perth’s Sgt. Hulka, estimates her band is, “about quarter of the way to where I want to be.” New single, ‘Feelin’ Fine’ ditches some of Sgt. Hulka’s previous musical quirks and oddities for a more mainstream soul sound and, in doing so, is a confident step forward into the band’s next quarter.
Not that there’s anything wrong with quirks and oddities. As a songwriter, Hulka will likely never give them up (hopefully), but striding confidently into the mainstream is part of the price of success and every band that wants it has to check to see if they have enough in the bank to make it at some stage in their career.
‘Feelin’ Fine’ is an exhortation to ditch the beauty filters and embrace the real. It’s wrapped up in silky horns that create a joyous groove. Hulka’s vocals are free and easy as she sings, I love the skin that I live in / And love the way I feel, inspired by what she terms a “transformative body-positive event”.
This song is a dance-floor filler as well as an affirmation; seriously good fun, which is what makes ‘Feelin’ Fine’ likely to win Sgt. Hulka the new fans they deserve while satisfying the desires of those who are already with them.
Sgt. Hulka have two more singles and some acoustic tracks set for release during the rest of 2024. If the upcoming releases hit the mark the way that ‘Feelin’ Fine’ does, this year could well be a rapid transition into that all important career third quarter. ‘Feelin’ Fine’ certainly puts Sgt. Hulka in credit when it comes to making it and, if Kirsty Hulka aspires to be a “badass queen”, who are we to argue. ‘Feelin’ Fine’ is flow and I suggest we all go with it.
