LEGS ELECTRIC TURN UP THE HEAT WITH NEW SINGLE, ‘VOLCANIC’

With the launch of their latest single, ‘Volcanic’, happening tonight at the Indi Bar in Scarborough, Legs Electric are about to embark on the next stage of an already storied career. To mark the occasion, Around The Sound spoke with founding member and Legs Electric drummer, Kylie Soanes.

…the band have never deviated from producing maximum energy rock and roll

“We’ve been together 12 years now, eight with the current lineup,” said Soanes. “In that time, we’ve released two EPs and ‘Volcanic’ is our sixth single.”

As sixth singles go, ‘Volcanic’ is something of a return to Legs Electric’s roots, although not a return to form, as the band have never deviated from producing maximum energy rock and roll, whether on record or live on stage. In fact, Legs Electric would have to be one of the most dynamic and wholly-good outfits anytime, anyplace.

‘Volcanic’, with its driving boogie riff, Chuck Berry cluck and Ama Quincee’s signature vocals, is an absolute fucking purler. This is a band that has the benefit of time served — they know their way around a song — but that’s lost none of its drive to reach for the stars and is capable of paying dues to what’s come before while sounding entirely like themselves. There is just so much to love in that, and the new single is an urgent reminder of all of those qualities.

Soanes’ take on ‘Volcanic’ is that, “We wanted to go back to our classic rock roots with this one. It’s along the same lines as ‘Illicit Love’ [from 2014 EP, Maximum Rock’n’Roll (which just happened to be released on my birthday — portentous or what!)]. We love the foot to the floor rock n roll.”

I love it, too!

When I first met Legs Electric they would have been about six years into their career and they told me, among other things, that they were working on an album. I’ve been hotly anticipating their debut long player ever since. I have a space reserved for it on my record shelf between Girls School’s Hit and Run and Trilogy’s Life On Earth and I check back regularly to see if the spot’s been magically filled by the gods of rock and thunder.

“Good question,” said Soanes, when I asked her when her band would make my dreams come true, before going on to deliver the good (fingers crossed) news.

“It all comes down to time and money,” Soanes said. “A few things have happened since we first met you and we’ve finally found an amazing producer who gets us and our vision so we are working on the album as we speak.”

Invocations answered! Although I didn’t dare to ask when; sometimes I know when not to push my luck.

As for the rest of 2025, Soanes was rock star coy, saying, “We’ve just signed with a new agent and have a heap of shows coming up that we can’t announce as yet. We would love a national tour so watch this space.”

Oh, I’m watching all right. As is a good portion of the rest of the world.

As well as rock star coy, Soanes also does a good line in rock star self-effacement. Her last request of me was, “Please make me sound better.”

I can’t, Kylie, if you and the rest of Legs Electric were any better it wouldn’t be fair on the competition.
